Why should people who work hard to create good educational content be forced to give it away for free?

Many people claim that �information wants to be free.� This is a true statement for some information. The information contained within most educational material is virtually crying out for freedom. Other information such as someone�s bank account numbers, or copyrighted songs, books, or movies does not want to be free. That information knows who it�s owner is and likes it that way. A fundamental tenant of the DEMML� system is that the information being taught by educational material is public information. On the other hand, it can take quite a bit of work to craft just the right explanation for a particularly difficult topic. Sometimes an author may spend months or years putting together an entire series of explanations for an entire series of topics. In the past we called this a textbook. But within DEMML� it is simply a cohesive set of topics. Often, a set of topics written to work together will be much easier to understand than a random collection of independently written topics, even when organized within the DEMML� classification system (the DEMCS™). Authors need to be rewarded for the great amount of work they put into their content. They also need to be protected from other contributors plagiarizing their work. Finally, software developers need to be assured that they too can earn a living by producing software that makes use of the power of DEMML�.
